Abstract: The escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus underscores the urgent need for alternative therapeutic agents. Costus igneus, traditionally known as the "insulin plant," has been utilized in various cultures for its purported anti-diabetic properties. This study investigates the in-vitro anti-diabetic efficacy of ethanolic leaf extracts of Costus igneus, focusing on their inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Enzyme inhibition assays revealed a dose-dependent inhibition, with maximum α-glucosidase inhibition at 85.4% and α-amylase inhibition at 72.1% at 500 μg/mL. These findings support the traditional use of Costus igneus in managing hyperglycemia and warrant further pharmacological exploration.
